With many of the technical aspects of financial management getting commoditized and under significant fee pressure, the client-relationship side of the business is where advisors must show real skills. Up to now, it’s been hard for me as a consultant to find a description of these gathered in one place for advisors. Scott Budge does an excellent job summarizing why advisors need great communication skills, how these skills fit together in working with families, and where and when to implement them in real-world situations. His chapters listing available resources in the industry are a valuable reference as well. Although a few of the psychological terms he describes may be a stretch for some advisors, the concepts are important to understand. Overall, I am very impressed with how The New Financial Advisor brings together the psychological and financial worlds for the front-line advisor. I have already started using it in my own work coaching advisors with high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients.

A partnership between psychology and financial advising is coming of age. The New Financial Advisor equips advisors with achievable psychological know-how. Scott Budge skillfully introduces advisors to the inner world of financial planning. As all advisors are aware, family dynamics and emotional issues weave themselves throughout the planning process. Often referred to as “soft issues,” advisors sometimes avoid conversations with clients where emotions run high. Dr. Budge’s book offers knowledge that when applied and practiced, leads to more effective planning objectives as a result of deeper trust. The New Financial Advisor is must reading for all advisors seeking to serve families of wealth.

Clients expect more from financial advisors than just providing investment advice. Because of the intricate relationship, financial advisors have new roles – psychologist, coach, etc. This book teaches readers how to develop the necessary skills to be successful in the new role and at the time profit from it.
This book does a great job describing to financial advisors how to become indispensable parts of their clients’ lives. The industry is changing and clients expect more. If you do not provide it to them, someone else will. I highly recommend this book to any financial advisor.
